Unlock the Future of Youth[KG1] : Amref Rolls Out Landmark Tech Training for Ethiopian Youth

In a bold move to empower the next generation of digital innovators, Amref Health Africa’s Digital Inclusion for Youth (DIY) Project has officially launched its online scholarship programme, a game-changing initiative designed to unlock opportunities for young people across Ethiopia.

Launched in partnership with Vodafone Foundation and Safaricom Ethiopia, the programme is providing access to in-demand online training, mentorship, coaching, and internet connectivity for Ethiopia’s youth, many of whom face systemic barriers to digital inclusion. 

The inaugural cohort of 500 scholars, selected from more than 12,000 applicants, has already embarked on their learning journey. These youth were chosen through a rigorous and inclusive process that emphasised gender equity, geographic diversity, educational background, and employment status.

“This scholarship is more than an opportunity, but a turning point in my life,” said, Biniam Ayalew, a 21-year-old recipient from Addis Ababa. “I now believe I can create a future for myself in the tech world.”

The programme, currently active in six major cities—Addis Ababa, Mekelle, Bahir Dar, Hawassa, Adama, and Debre Berhan, is just one component of the broader DIY Project. The initiative also focuses on upgrading digital infrastructure and connectivity in youth centers, developing local, relevant online courses, and supporting youth entrepreneurship and innovation.

Altogether, the project aims to reach over 75,000 young people, with 1,000 youth benefiting directly from the intensive online scholarship component.

By the end of the programme, scholars are expected to start their own ventures, improve employability, and advance careers in a digital-first economy.

In a world increasingly shaped by technology, the DIY scholarship initiative transcends the boundaries of a typical training programme, it serves as a launchpad for equity, innovation, and digital leadership in Ethiopia.
