SUMMARY:CPHIA
DESCRIPTION:AMREF CPHIA SIDE EVENTS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFuture of Global Health Initiatives: The Future We Want to See \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDate: Wednesday\, 29 November 2023\n\n\n\nTime: 10:00 – 20:00 (CAT)\n\n\n\nVenue: Mosi Oa Tunya | New Wing\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAmref Health Africa\, in partnership with the Future of Global Health Initiatives\, will host a side event during the 3rd International Conference on Public Health (CPHIA 2023). The event aims to bring together African public health policymakers and advocates to discuss and collaborate on shaping a global health financing ecosystem that is fit for purpose beyond 2030. \n\n\n\nThe discussion will focus on key areas such as the lessons learned during the COVID-19 pandemic\, changes in demographics and disease burden\, climate change\, conflict\, and political and economic shifts. These areas all converge on the need for changes in how external funders\, including global health initiatives (GHIs)\, support the health programs of low- and middle-income countries. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHidden Pandemic We Must Not Ignore: African Leadership for AMR Action\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDate: Wednesday\, 29 November 2023\n\n\n\nVenue: Ntumba Chushi | Radisson Blu Hotel\, Lusaka\n\n\n\nTime: 07:30 – 09:00 (CAT)\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis session will bring together key stakeholders to explore ideas and initiatives to tackle Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) in Africa effectively. AMR is a significant challenge in the global health sector\, with multiple factors contributing to the worsening crisis. If no intervention is made\, by 2050\, Africa is expected to bear the highest burden of the predicted 10 million annual deaths and lose up to 5% of national GDPs. \n\n\n\nThe discussion will explore existing initiatives and any needed initiatives in line with Africa CDC’s New Public Health Order\, focusing on respectful and action-oriented partnerships\, commitments to strengthen institutions for health\, and developing a fit-for-purpose health workforce that is responsive to AMR. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEmpowering Health Heroes: What must we do to build Africa’s Resilient Health Workforce for Public Health Security? \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEnsuring the availability of a well-equipped and trained health workforce is a crucial pillar in the Global Architecture for Health Emergency Preparedness\, Response\, and Resilience. The World Health Organization recognizes this as a central role in preventing\, preparing\, and responding to emergent public health challenges. This aligns with the Africa CDC’s New Public Health Order\, which emphasizes the importance of creating a trained and adaptable health workforce that can effectively enhance Primary Health Care (PHC) and protect community health systems against emerging threats and shocks. The Amref-led session at CPHIA2023 will highlight the imperative of equipping health professionals with the essential skills and competencies required for PPR. \n\n\n\nThe session will also facilitate a comprehensive discussion on emerging frontiers in public health security\, providing a platform to explore novel paradigms and anticipated trajectories in Global Health Security (GHS) for Africa. Overall\, the event will shed light on the critical role of a strong and well-equipped health workforce in ensuring health security and resilience in the face of emerging public health challenges. of this discourse will encompass optimizing digital health resources\, where participants will dissect the effective integration of technological advancements to fortify public health security measures. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGavi CSO Constituency Event Series – Civil Society Dialogue Series & Immunisation Today Podcast \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDate: Wednesday\, 29 November 2023\n\n\n\nVenue: Radisson Blu\, Room 2 | Old Wing\n\n\n\nTime: 07:00 – 09:00 (CAT)\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAs we move towards a future where digital and in-person experiences are more intertwined\, we believe a hybrid approach to our Civil Society Dialogue Series and Immunisation Today Podcast will amplify our reach\, impact and inclusivity. These hybrid events will combine live\, in-person presentations with an interactive virtual component\, offering our audience the best of both worlds.  \n\n\n\nObjectives of the Session\n\n\n\n\nTo engage\, inform\, and inspire civil society organisations (CSOs) across the globe on critical health issues and their solutions. \n\n\n\nTo stimulate dialogue and discussion on global health topics\, focusing on immunization. \n\n\n\nTo strengthen relationships with CSOs and other key stakeholders in the global health community. \n\n\n\nTo increase awareness and understanding of Gavi’s role in improving health outcomes worldwide.

SUMMARY:No More Excuses: Accountability Mechanisms for Girls and Young Women
DESCRIPTION:Adolescent girls represent one of the most marginalized demographic groups globally. Their unique needs often get overlooked in both child-rights\, and women’s-rights conversations\, and their voices go unheard in decisions on policy\, climate\, health\, and beyond. Accountability for adolescent-focused commitments is not guaranteed – global processes such as Generation Equality lack adolescent-led accountability mechanism. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nThis session\, facilitated by young people\, showcases approaches to achieving accountability for adolescent girls and young women in all their diversity. We will hear from diverse stakeholders on challenges\, solutions\, and commitments which advance power being shifted to adolescent girls – nothing about them\, without them.

SUMMARY:Girls at the Center: The Power of Partnering with Communities to End Female Genital Mutilation
DESCRIPTION:Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) presents a major challenge in several countries around the globe. It is internationally recognized as a harmful practice and a form of gender-based violence (GBV) that endangers the lives of millions of girls and women. It violates the foundational tenets of human rights reflected in various international conventions\, resolutions and declarations. \n\n\n\nCommunities – women and girls\, men and boys\, traditional and religious leaders\, health workers\, law and policy makers\, must be mobilized and empowered at the grassroots level if we are to end FGM. Evidence shows that when girls and women have the power to make their own choices about their bodies\, it positively affects other spheres in their lives\, including their political\, social and economic participation. \n\n\n\nJoin Amref Health Africa\, The Girl Generation and its partners\, Population Council\, Power to Youth\, Y-ACT and Youth Power Hub for an interactive session on shifting approaches\, creating positive impacts and contributing to putting an end to the Violence Against Women and Girls (VAWG) including FGM\, by putting girls and women at the center and working in partnership with communities. \n\n\n\nThe objectives of the sessions include: \n\n\n\n\nExplore what we mean by ‘girl-centered programming’ and how it works\, and why this is a key approach to end FGM. Present evidence of what works within this approach; \n\n\n\nShare practical examples and lessons on why and how special attention is given to protect and support survivors and front-line activists in our efforts to put them at the center of our programmes and movements to end FGM.

SUMMARY:76th UNGA Side Event: Community understanding and trust as key drivers for vaccinations in Africa
DESCRIPTION:Trust is a key component of successful roll-out of any vaccination program. \n\n\n\nYet – trust building and acceptance around vaccines\, and COVID-19 vaccines in particular\, remain an under-explored area. And when explored it often lacks a focus on people and community – the human element. There is merit in changing the way the world thinks about vaccine acceptance in Africa. As Director of Africa CDC\, Dr John Nkengasong\, has made a call to action: “Let’s find out what is the wall between us and the communities\, and how we bridge the trust gap”.Covid has uncovered deep-seated issues around vaccines: \n\n\n\nVaccine scarcity in Africa – and abundance in the north – the inequity in distribution of a life-saving commodityMisinformation\, misunderstanding and lack of trust in the community with respect to vaccines and even the pandemic itself – what is the community voice here\, what are their beliefs and practices with respect to illness and vaccinesLack of proper communication at the community level to dispel myths about vaccines\, thus the level of confidence and acceptance which exists on the continent – the role of government and health facilities; how can we enable community health workers to bridge this knowledge gap – supported by technologyFragile & weak health systems which have been chronically underfunded being unable to address the emergent needs presenting as a result of covid and other pandemics\n\n\n\nGovernments and institutions are coming to understand the importance of planning for and mitigating risks related to vaccine acceptance. Several reports such as the GOARN COVID-19 Global Risk Communication and Engagement Strategy report are focusing on building trust and social cohesion to mitigate the effects of the pandemic. This roundtable discussion contemplates the development of a trust framework and how actors and institutions\, national governments as well as local organizations would utilize this framework and how will it impact their success in achieving equitable vaccine delivery and uptake in the future. \n\n\n\nRegister Here
