Amref increases child deliveries at health centres by 88 per cent

Amref Health Africa, the international non-governmental organisation (NGO) has assisted in the increase of pregnant women to deliver at health centres by 87.9 per cent in 2019 in Lake Zone, Tanzania.

In addition, the NGO provided equipment for the improvement of infrastructures for service delivery for mother and child and also enabled clinic attendance for pregnant mothers and children to reach 88.4 percent in 2019 as compared to 85.8 percent in 2017

Speaking at the weekend when receiving medical equipment against Covid-19 infections provided by the NGO, the Acting Simiyu Regional Medical Officer Dr Khamis Kulemba said through the second phase of the Birth and Life project they have made great changes by removing obstacles that had been in place.

“Joint supervision in the health sector between AMREF and the Regional authorities have born fruits from the increase of clinic attendance and for pregnant women giving birth at health centres, and to us this is great pride,” said Dr Kulemba.

Amref Tanzania Lake Zone Coordinator Gaspery Misungwi said his NGO has solved various challenges in child and mother health care service delivery as so far the number of deaths have gone down significantly. 

“Amref has done a lot in ensuring the health service for pregnant women and children is properly given in the required standard,” he said.

Earlier while receiving items for protection against Covid-19 infections valued at 23.7m/- the Simiyu Regional Administrative Officer (RAS) Mariam Mbaga thanked the NGO for its efforts to ensure good health for all Tanzania citizens, and promised the items received will be properly utilized.

So far Amref Health Africa has a total of 25 projects in the country’s various regions and about 45 percent of them are being implemented in the Lake Zone regions.
