Meru, Amref Partner To Address Mental Health and Cancer in the Kenyan County

The Deputy Governor of Meru County Hon. Titus Ntuchiu has this morning met and held discussions with a team from Amref Kenya who are visiting the County on fact-finding mission regarding mental health and cancer disease.

The team led by Catherine Mwenda who is the Project Manager, discussed with the Deputy Governor at length over a program where Amref is partnering with the County Government of Meru to carry out research on best strategies to address the two health issues in the County.

The program has already been ongoing in in the sub counties of Imenti Central, Tigania East and Imenti North where samples and interviews have been carried out on local health workers, religious leaders, Njuri Ncheke elders and other stakeholders.

_“This partnership is very timely because even before the start of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, Meru County ranked extremely high nationally in cancer prevalence and our Government led by Governor Kiraitu Murungi has been working tirelessly on various approaches to address the problem, including the successful organization of the inaugural Mt. Kenya Run early this year which was aimed at raising funds to establish a cancer center at Meru Level 5 Hospital,” said the Deputy Governor.

He also noted that the establishment of the cancer center is well underway where the County Government has already acquired land at the former Public Works premises.
