The development partners have pledged their continuous support to Zanzibar so that more achievements could be attained in the health sector.
Some of the development partners who pledged the support include the World Health Organisation (WHO), Global Fund, the US, and the AMREF Health Africa-Tanzania.
The remark was made by the four institutions led by the US Ambassador to Tanzania Dr Donald Wright, during the inauguration of the newly rehabilitated ‘Public Health- Emergency Operations Centre (PH-EOC) located at Lumumba area in the City.
The rehabilitation was supported by the development partners. The ceremony was also attended by WHO Liaison Officer- Zanzibar Dr Andemichael Ghirmay, Global Fund Representative Mr Nelson Msuya, and AMREF Health Africa, Tanzania Dr Florence Temu.
Zanzibar’s Minister for Health, Social Welfare, Elders, Gender, and Children Mr Nassor Ahmed Mazrui expressed gratitude to development partners for their support.
According to Mr Mazrui, the aim of expanding the PH-EOC is to effectively detect and respond to public health threats.
The Ministry’s Permanent Secretary (PS) Dr Omar Sharjak stated the PHEOC began as a one-room facility in 2019 before the recent major rehabilitation which included fixing modern equipment, He said that the development partners teamed up to help re-establishment of the centre with an incident management system, and procured critical equipment.
The equipment include video conference tools, projector, internet connectivity, and EOC software licensing) to ensure the functionality of the PHEOC.
CDC also helped train key staff from the PHEOC in the Public Health Emergency Management Fellowship programme Atlanta, USA.
