NGO Disburses 400 Dignity Kits To Schools In Bungoma

by Amref Health Africa
School going girls in Bungoma County have every reason to smile after a non-governmental organization (NGO) provided dignity kits for them in an ongoing initiative targeting girl children in the community.Speaking to the press, Collins Kibet an advocacy coordinator Amref health Africa in Bungoma county, who led the team in monitoring the distribution of the dignity kits, said that the move was as a result of many school going girls undergoing challenges during their menstruation periods as others are forced to seek assistance from men with bad habits who later impregnate them and flee away.

“I started this exercise with an aim of helping those who are unable to get sanitary pads to access them here freely, we are not charging anybody we are here to help you realize your big dreams,” he said, Kibet urged parents to support their learners fully and guide them accordingly.

Kibet added that he has ensured that girls get appropriate dignity kits to enable them continue with their studies uninterrupted. The kit consisted of towel, soap, body oil and sanitary pads.

During the distribution exercise a total of 400 kits were issued to pupils and students all drawn from the nine sub-counties.

” This is just the beginning of our dignity kits distribution exercise. We will be extending it to other places,” he said, adding that Amref Health Africa has partnered with other organizations, Education sector, Bungoma youth organizations and the ministry of health to ensure that school going girls are catered for.

On his part, Bungoma West deputy county commissioner Henry Katana urged parents to stop kangaroo courts and instead report defilers to relevant authorities for the right procedures to be followed.

“Bungoma west and Mt. Elgon has recorded a high number of teenage pregnancy cases in the past. I believe through these wonderful engagements with different organizations we will be able to stem them,” Katana noted.
