Africa: Amref, ten mobile clinics arrive in Kenya

Ten mobile clinics are ready to travel the last mile to reach the most fragile people who have not yet received the first dose of the Covid vaccine in Kenya. The initiative, made possible by the collaboration between the Kenyan Ministry of Health, Amref Health Africa and AstraZeneca, will allow, when the 10 clinics are fully operational, to reach 1,000 people a day. And it will help increase access and uptake of the vaccine in Kenya.

As of June 17, 2022, 31.4% of the adult population in Kenya was fully vaccinated against Covid-19, while the average vaccination rate in Africa is 17.7%, lagging behind other regions of the world. Each mobile clinic can vaccinate 70-100 people per day. Operated in partnership with county health departments and in compliance with health and infection prevention control standards, the clinics are equipped with solar-powered refrigerators and backup power. The timely acquisition of data and the drafting of reports is facilitated by computers connected to the internet. Amref Health Africa will take care of the supplies of mobile clinics in the most difficult-to-reach areas to ensure their effective use.

Githinji Gitahi, the Group CEO of Amref Health Africa, said: “It is clear that health emergencies are destined to remain, and thinking outside the box through health innovations may be our only chance to respond promptly if and when emergencies. occur”.
