Dar es Salaam, Tanzania – 8th May 2024, Amref Health Africa-Tanzania signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the World Health Organization (WHO) Tanzania and 11 other non-state actors to collaborate on advancing health services in the country. This partnership focuses on improving the Health for All agenda and accelerating the Universal Health Coverage (UHC) achievement in Tanzania. The initiative will support various health sector initiatives over the next two years.
The signing ceremony, hosted at the United Nations (UN) office in Dar es Salaam, marks a significant milestone in the collaboration between Amref Tanzania and WHO Tanzania. Under the MoU, both organizations aim to identify areas of mutual benefit, mobilize resources, develop solutions for common interests, and advocate on priority health issues to achieve meaningful results.
In his remarks, Dr. Charles Sagoe-Moses, the WHO Country Representative in Tanzania, stated: “These MoUs signify our commitment to working hand in hand with various organizations and entities to advance public health in Tanzania. They further reflect our shared dedication to strengthening health systems, disease prevention and control, health promotion and education, and fostering research and innovation.”
Dr. Florence Temu, Country Director of Amref Tanzania, expressed her enthusiasm for the collaboration, saying, “we are humbled to be among the eleven Non-State Actors (NSAs) signing the MoU with WHO Tanzania. This partnership promises continued collaboration and strategic dialogues to advance the Health for All agenda in Tanzania. We are committed to sustaining these efforts for healthier communities in Tanzania and beyond.”
Dr. Temu further emphasized the importance of resource mobilization and investment in primary health care to achieve UHC in Tanzania, stating, to achieve UHC, we need to mobilize adequate resources and increase investments in primary health care, aligning them with the UHC agenda.”
This MoU marks a significant step towards achieving the shared goals and objectives of both Amref Tanzania and WHO Tanzania, setting the stage for impactful collaborations that will benefit the Tanzanian population.
In December 2022, the WHO country office invited various NSAs to partner in implementing WHO’s country collaboration strategy for Tanzania. After thorough evaluations, Amref Tanzania secured one of the 11 MoUs among 46 contenders. Alongside Amref, other NSAs selected were Ifakara Health Institute, Catholic Relief Services, Doctors with Africa, Centre of Excellence in Health Monitoring and Evaluation, Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences, Mzumbe University, Raising up Foundation, SIKIKA, the International Rescue Committee, and the Tanzania Health Summit.
