NAIROBI, Kenya, May 18 – The healthcare workforce in the country is set to benefit from training on the Universal Health Coverage, which is part of President Uhuru Kenyatta’s Big Four agenda.
This follows a Memorandum of Understanding between the Kenya School of Government and Amref Health Africa which is set to enhance cooperation between the two parties in organizing and implementing capacity building programs at national, regional and international levels.
Under the MoU, health workers from the public sector will participate in Amref’s continuous professional development courses while it also seeks to strengthen the capacity of KSG in the area of health management.
Amref Health Africa Chief Executive Officer Dr Githinji Gitahi who spoke during the signing ceremony held this week said they are committed to improve the lives of people through quality care delivery and equipping health workers with high-end skilled manpower.
“It resonates with our strategic objectives of strengthening leadership, management and governance capacities within the health systems as well as increasing the number and skills of mid-level and community level health workers,” Gitahi said.
According to the World Health Organisation, the world will be short of 12.9 million health care workers by 2035 which Gitahi said informs the need to train and educate more health workers to build their capacities.
He noted that Investment in Africa’s health systems is vital if the continent is to achieve inclusive and sustainable growth.
“The MoU reaffirms the institutions joint commitment to achieve Universal Health Coverage and the Sustainable Development Goals target,” he pointed out.
On his part, KSG Director General Prof Ludic Chweya said “The School believes in partnerships to advance the quest to empower public officers across all sectors.”
“The Act that established the School gives provision for such partnerships with strategic institutions in a bid to deliver on KSG mandate.”
