Africa’s health systems are continuously crippled by climate change. The current expenditure on climate action initiatives does not reflect the urgent need to prioritize funding for health infrastructure. We are excited to be presenting ‘Common African Position on Climate and Health for negotiations at COP28! Through it, we are pushing for increased investments in climate funding and development of a treaty on climate change and health to spell out accountability mechanisms, financing, and budget prioritization. Investing in African healthcare systems and fostering collaboration between the private sector and governments is crucial in building resilience and sustainable solutions. #COP28 #AmrefAtCOP28
Malnutrition is a significant problem in Africa, impacting around 58.7 mil children. Responsible for 28% of all premature deaths caused by environmental factors. Adequate finance plays a crucial role in tackling this and other challenges. @Amref_Worldwide is committed to promoting and pushing for effective financial strategies to combat climate change and its effects on health systems in Africa. #COP28 #AmrefAtCOP28

Climate-smart health care tech & innovations in Africa: What has been achieved and what obstacles have been faced over the last 5 years? 📍The Health Care Climate Roundtable at #COP28. While we look forward to exploring strategies, needs and approaches to climate-smart health care, we continue to advocate for policies that support sustainable development, climate-resilient infrastructure, and early warning systems for extreme weather events with health at the centre. #AmrefAtCOP28
Climate-smart health care tech & innovations in Africa: What has been achieved over the last 5 years? We are joining industry leaders to explore this at the #COP28 Health Care Climate Roundtable. #AmrefAtCOP28
Our aim is to establish a vision for alignment and synergy between the various emerging vehicles for health care climate action, and map key moments to move our common agenda forward. #AmrefAtCOP28 #COP28

To effectively combat effects of climate change on the health and well-being of women and girls, we need to develop comprehensive strategies and plans that consider complexity and interconnectedness of the issue with a focus on a health systems perspective. #AmrefAtCOP28 #COP28
The ripple effects of climate change on public health, economy, environment, and education is predicted to worsen with rising global temperatures, threatening progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals and universal health coverage. #AmrefAtCOP28 #COP28
Climate change is likely to have an impact on women's unique nutritional requirements due to menstruation and childbirth, their higher rates of anaemia, and increased respiratory and cardiovascular diseases arising from poor air quality. #AmrefAtCOP28 #COP28
Climate change affect our health and wellbeing through impacts of extreme events, worsening air quality, changes in the spread of infectious diseases, threats to food and water quality and quantity and effects on our mental health. #AmrefAtCOP28 #COP2
Despite the glaring health challenges, only 5% of climate funds go to adaptation and only 1% of the adaptation funds are dedicated to health. #AmrefAtCOP28 #COP28
The #AmrefAtCOP28 sessions will focus on the impact of climate change on maternal, newborn and child health (MNCH) addressing research approaches, findings and policy implications of a series of studies focusing on climate change and health and advocate solutions. #COP28
It’s critical to unpack the impacts of climate change on maternal and child health and develop national adaptation programs to safeguard pregnant and postpartum women, newborns and children in the anthropogenic era. #AmrefAtCOP28 #COP28
At COP28, we urge all stakeholders to reflect on the complex multidisciplinary and multisectoral nature of climate change adaptation for women's and children’s health. #AmrefAtCOP28 #COP28
Amref seeks to highlight the importance of health system strengthening in climate adaptation measures and support actions for health care systems to be more gender and equity responsive and more resilient to health and nutrition crises. #AmrefAtCOP28 #COP28
At COP28, Amref and its partners will disseminate the findings of the UNFPA and Queen Mary review of the NDCs report, highlighting entry points for country intervention and the importance of incorporating a strong gender and climate-resilient health component in countries’ national climate plans. #AmrefAtCOP28 #COP28
At COP28, we seek to mobilize support for WHO lead work on priority indicators to monitor the impacts of extreme heat on MNCH and potential thresholds for heat-health early warning systems that are specific to pregnant and postpartum women, newborns, and infants. #AmrefAtCOP28 #COP28
Increasing greenhouse gas emissions are causing devastating consequences for health, including rising global temperatures, extreme weather patterns and a rising sea level due to climate change. #AmrefAtCOP28 #COP28
Due to climate change, there has been a decline in water quality, food insecurity, and forced migrations due to environmental degradation and humanitarian crises. #AmrefAtCOP28 #COP28
With every increase in temperature beyond 1.5 degrees Celsius, there is a rise in the occurrence of severe and fatal weather conditions, as well as outbreaks of diseases such as malaria, dengue, and cholera. #AmrefAtCOP28 #COP28
Responding to climate change requires health system strengthening, including sexual and reproducing health rights and maternal health and child health services and stronger response and prevention services for mental health and GBV responses. #AmrefAtCOP28 #COP28
The direct damage costs of climate change to health, excluding costs in health-determining sectors such as agriculture and water and sanitation, are projected to be between US$2-4 billion per year by 2030. #AmrefAtCOP28 #COP28
