Nearly two Decades of Impact: How Amref Health Africa and the European Union Transformed Health and Resilience Across Ethiopia

by Amref Health Africa

Since 2008, Amref Health Africa, with steadfast support from the European Union, has worked hand-in-hand with Ethiopian government bodies, local communities, and private sector partners to tackle pressing health challenges. This collaboration, rooted in a shared vision for healthier, more resilient communities, has brought life-changing health services to millions in regions across Ethiopia.

As we mark this over-a-decade-long partnership, Amref reflects on the profound impact achieved through these joint efforts. From strengthening family planning and sexual and reproductive health services to enhancing water, sanitation, and hygiene infrastructure, our initiatives have been instrumental in Ethiopia’s mission to improve the health and socio-economic wellbeing of its people. These projects, aligned with national priorities, are not just transforming lives but are laying a foundation for long-term health and prosperity.

Dr Ayele Teshome, State Minister at Ethiopia’s Ministry of Health, highlighted the significance of these efforts, stating:

“The European Union’s financial support, channelled through committed partners like Amref Health Africa, has played a pivotal role in uplifting our communities. Together, we can continue to build a healthier future for all Ethiopians, especially for women, children, and young people.”

One of the flagship initiatives, the RESET Plus: Scaling Up Family Planning for Resilience Building project, has demonstrated the power of collaboration in addressing chronic health issues. Supported by a €5 million EU investment, Amref partnered with WE-Action and Kulich Youth Reproductive Health and Development to expand family planning and resilience initiatives across Afar, Amhara, Oromia, and Southern Ethiopia. The project has not only improved reproductive health but has empowered women, placing them at the heart of community transformation.

European Union Delegate Beatrice Neri praised the partnership’s success:

“Amref’s work on the ground aligns closely with the needs of the communities they serve. The RESET Plus project illustrates the depth of this commitment by focusing on empowering women to lead change in their communities.”

Thanks to EU backing, Amref has trained over 4,500 health workers and supplied 489 health facilities with essential medical equipment and medications. Nearly 380,000 adolescents and young people now have access to sexual and reproductive health education and services, with 250,000 women gaining critical family planning support. Additionally, approximately one million people have gained access to clean drinking water through the establishment of around 200 WASH facilities, fostering healthier and more resilient communities.

Amref Health Africa’s Country Director, Misrak Makonnan, expressed deep gratitude for the EU’s support:

“Our partnership has empowered us to address crucial health priorities across Ethiopia. Together, we’ve reached over 4.5 million people with essential health services, paving the way for resilient, thriving communities.”

As Amref Health Africa celebrates this significant milestone, we are reminded of the power of partnership and shared purpose. With continued collaboration, we are committed to building on this foundation to further strengthen health systems and deliver impactful, sustainable health solutions for future generations not only in Ethiopia but also Africa at large.
