The 78th UN General Assembly seeks to reset the future of global health with three health-related High-Level Meetings (HLMs) of heads of state and government scheduled to take place during the General Assembly week, with a focus on Universal Health Coverage (UHC), Pandemic Prevention, Preparedness, Response, and Recovery (PPRR), and Tuberculosis.

 

During UNGA 78, our delegation will join world leaders and partners to discuss and debate how to confront the global health challenges and find strategies to accelerate action on some of the most pressing challenges for Africa.

 

Below is a list of events and activities.

Advancing Pandemic Prevention, Preparedness and Response (PPPR) focusing on local manufacture of health products and technologies in Africa – Leveraging the role of public-private partnerships

Venue, Date and Time: The Millennium Hilton Hotel, New York: 18th of September, 2023, 18:00-20:30

The event co-hosted by Africa CDC, AUDA-NEPAD, AfCFTA and PATH, purposes to foster conversation and recommendation on Africa’s efforts towards strengthening the continental Pandemic Prevention, Preparedness and Response (PPPR) architecture; and brief African member states and partners on the ongoing developments pertaining to global coordination for equitable distribution of medical countermeasures in future pandemics. Other objectives include:

 

  1. Leverage the interest by global, continental, and regional procurers to increase demand financing towards improving investment in local production.
  2. Mobilize public and private collaboration towards financing and investing in Africa’s medical products value chain.
  3. Evoke participation of different stakeholder groups, i.e., private sector, donors, and health organizations, for localizing manufacturing and innovation of all health products.
  4. Highlight the collaboration between AU organs and other stakeholders to strengthen PPPR coordination and pharmaceutical manufacturing on the continent.

 

Event Format

 

The event will have remarks, keynotes, plenary presentations and panel discussions featuring AU Heads of State and Government, high-level leaders and representatives from the donor and partner landscape.

Aligning Global Health Financing and Political Accountability on the Path to UHC

Date: Tuesday 19th September

Time: 2:15 – 4:15pm EST

Location: Embassy Room, Westin Grand Central, 212 E 42nd St. (0.3 miles from UNHQ), New York, USA.

 

The event will be co-hosted by the UN Foundation and Amref Health Africa and will build on discussions had at – and draw alignment from – the Africa Health Leaders’ Policy Forum meetings held in Botswana at the end of August, and further milestones in the FGHI process.

 

This is an invites only, intimate high-level roundtable event designed to bring together leaders from ministries of health, finance and foreign affairs and development, global health initiatives (GHIs), multilateral and UN agencies, civil society and youth leaders to discuss a 15+ year vision for aligning investments for health and wellbeing to accelerate progress on the health-related Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and the historic opportunity at hand for partners to align in support of country progress towards UHC.

 

Proposed Objectives

  • Share reflections on the pathway to UHC – and the role of GHIs in financing alongside country governments
  • Build on discussions and the shared vision coming out of the Africa Health Leaders’ Policy Forum meetings held in Botswana to incorporate perspectives from Latin America, South East Asia and other national, regional and global health stakeholders.
  • Inform Q4 2023 deliberations on a set of commitments for collective action for change to better support countries in their trajectories toward UHC.
  • Discuss and align on a vision for the political leadership that is required for FGHI commitments for collective action to be implemented.
  • Share reflections and insights on a pathway for building political oversight and accountability
  • for action on this agenda, in 2024 and beyond.

Champions of Change: Investing in Next Gen Global Health Leadership

Date: Monday, September 18th 2023

Time: 2.30 – 4.30

Venue: Pfizer NYHQ in Hudson Yards

Co-hosted by Amref, Pfizer and Devex, the event seeks to convene the next generation of leaders in global health and development at the Pfizer New York City Headquarters for a partial -day program with an aim of building relationship with tomorrow’s leaders in health access and equity. The session targets 100 early -career professionals and select graduate students in public health and international affairs.

 

Format: A four -part armchair discussion series featuring Caroline Roan, Albert Bourla, Dr. Githinji Gitahi, and Raj Kumar alongside various young leaders. The event will also feature:

 

  • An opening poetry reading from a member of the UN’s Young Leaders Cohort.
  • A “wall of why” where participants, speakers, and Pfizer colleagues can write their “why” for working in global health.
  • A reception with various engagement components including a photo booth, conversation -starter nametags, and signed books for takeaway.
