Amref Health Africa in Kenya wins Global Fund contract 2015-2017
September 16th, 2015. Nairobi, Kenya: – Amref Health Africa in Kenya is the principle recipient of USD$ 30,472,094 (Kshs. 3,108,153,588) from the Global Fund for TB and Malaria.
During the official contract signing ceremony held at the National Treasury, the Cabinet Secretary, Henry Rotich commended the Amref Health Africa in Kenya for contributing towards the improvement of prompt diagnosis and treatments of malaria and improved TB case finding through community screening.
“The Kenyan Government is pleased that together with our development partners and NGO’s, we can work towards eradicating TB and Malaria. The contract we have just signed will run for a period of two years, ending in October 2017. Within that time, we anticipate to report major achievements in eradicating malaria, reducing the HIV and TB burden on the health sector.”
Amref Health Africa in Kenya aims at accelerating reduction of TB, Leprosy and Lung diseases burden through provision of people –centred universally accessible, acceptable and quality services in Kenya.
“Through the TB project, we have contributed towards the achievement of the national targets of improving TB treatment success by tracing and referring over 23,638 TB treatment interrupters and providing nutrition support to over 30,000 severely malnourished TB patients,” said Dr Meshack Ndirangu, Country Director, Amref Health Africa in Kenya. “We also contributed to improved TB case finding through community screening of contacts of smear positive patients with over 2,500 TB cases diagnosed and started on treatment.”
Amref Health Africa in Kenya was awarded A1 Ranking by the Global Fund for its high project performance and contribution towards improvement of health outcomes at the community level.
Adds Dr Ndirangu, “Through the malaria grant, we have contributed to improvement of prompt diagnosis and treatments of malaria with over 170,000 uncomplicated malaria cases treated at community level. Our activities have reduced the workload at the link health facility by almost 50% and through our sub-grants we have built capacity of over 25,652 health care workers of various cadres both at the community and facility level. We have also built grant management and institutional capacity of over 50 grassroots Community Support Organisations.”
The signing ceremony was attended by the head of grants Mr. Mark Edington, Ambassador of US to Kenya Robert F. Codec, Ambassador of Japan to Kenya Tatsushi Terada, Health Cabinet Secretary James Macharia, and Cabinet Secretary, National Treasury Henry Rotich.
The funding for the Global Fund TB and Malaria comes from the US Government, WHO, the European Union, UNAIDS, Japanese Government and the United Kingdom. The other counterpart recipients were Ministry of Finance, Kenya Red Cross Society and Kenya Aids NGOs Consortium.

About the Global Fund TB/Malaria Project Amref Health Africa in Kenya has been implementing Global Fund supported projects since 2005. In 2009, it was selected as the Non State Principal Recipient (PR) for the Tuberculosis grant implemented through 40 grassroots Community Support Organisations as Sub recipients. In 2010, KCM selected Amref Health Africa as Non State PR for Malaria grant implemented in 10 malaria prone counties in Nyanza and Western regions; implemented through 17 organisations as Sub recipients. In this arrangement, Amref Health Africa in Kenya was nominated as a Principal Recipient for Tuberculosis and Malaria Non State Actors component.
