For us to achieve Universal Health Coverage in Africa, we need a strong, efficient, well-run health system that meets priority health needs through people-centered integrated care.
There is no Universal Health Coverage without universal access to sanitation and safe water.
We cannot achieve Universal Health Coverage without basic primary health care services at the community level
We cannot achieve Universal Health Coverage overnight and therefore all countries should take action to move more rapidly towards it, or to maintain the gains they have already made (@WHO)
Did you know that at least half the world’s population is still missing out on essential health services? You and me have a responsibility to make Universal Health Coverage a reality in Africa.
To achieve UHC, we need to provide quality standards by training health care providers in adolescent health and adolescent-responsive services including special needs for Adolescents Living with HIV.
For individuals and communities to lead a productive and fulfilling life, Universal Health Coverage (UHC) must ensure that there is access to quality and affordable health care everywhere, anywhere to everyone.
Equity is the most important principle in UHC – ensuring that socially disadvantaged and marginalised populations in Africa have access to health care – and fully realise their right to health.
To support equitable access, countries need to promote primary health care and design interventions that will address the health needs of marginalised and vulnerable populations.
In Africa, Community Health Workers contribute to bridging the gap between communities and the formal health system: community engagement, referral, health promotion and disease prevention at community level.
The success and value of UHC depends on the ability to provide quality services to all people irrespective of social economic differences with no risk for catastrophic health expenditure.
As countries move toward Universal Health Coverage, resources are constrained and funds must be used wisely. ‘Strategic Purchasing’ is one way to get more value for the money spent whilst ensuring equity.
The current momentum towards achieving UHC in sub-Saharan Africa will only lead to results if commitments made by leaders are turned into action through adequate accountability mechanisms.
In Africa and Asia, there has been a recognition of the importance of partnership among governments, civil society and the private sector in advancing Universal Health Coverage.
